Kitchen Remodel + Interior Refresh

Size:

4000 ft²

Set in the exclusive community of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, this home carried the visual weight of several past remodels—each in a different style, none in conversation with the others. The clients were ready for clarity, cohesion, and a kitchen that finally felt like the true heart of their home.

Studio Strongwater was brought in to lead a comprehensive kitchen remodel unifying the home’s Mediterranean heritage with a fresh California sensibility. Even though the project was based out of state, the design process unfolded seamlessly through thoughtful planning, clear communication, and strategic in-person visits. Beth traveled to Rancho Santa Fe, California during initial discovery, again at construction kickoff, and later at a pivotal stage when cabinetry and millwork were being fitted, ensuring every detail would align perfectly.

The result is an interior design Rancho Santa Fe, CA project that demonstrates how a carefully orchestrated long-distance partnership can feel just as personal and connected as a local one. This luxury home renovation in San Diego County proves that modern remote design, when intentional and well-guided, can deliver beautifully refined, deeply livable results.

The Vision

The vision for this kitchen remodel in Rancho Santa Fe centered on reconnection: between rooms, between old and new, and between the architecture and the way this family actually lives. The existing kitchen felt visually closed off, dark, and stylistically inconsistent with the rest of the home.

The proposed design re-established harmony within the home’s Mediterranean framework. Removing a heavy archway opened the kitchen to the family room; a generous new island invited gathering and conversation. Clean-lined cabinetry and sculptural lighting introduced a modern sensibility, while warm woods, textured tile, and soft arches honored the home’s heritage.

Studio Strongwater would help the homeowners navigate the complexity of reconciling many past remodels, refining choices so the home ultimately has one cohesive vision. The result is a California kitchen design that feels effortless and timeless, combining the richness of modern Mediterranean interiors with contemporary ease.

Kitchen

The original kitchen reflected years of piecemeal updates, with heavy finishes, an enclosed bar element, and a layout that visually separated the space from the surrounding rooms. While generous in size, it felt disconnected and underutilized, more a pass-through than a place to gather.

Kitchen

The reimagined kitchen anchors the home with clarity and warmth. By opening sightlines, simplifying the layout, and introducing cohesive cabinetry, materials, and lighting, the space now supports both daily life and entertaining. Natural wood, sculptural lighting, and refined finishes bring modern ease while honoring the home’s Mediterranean roots.

Sitting Area

Previously, the sitting area felt secondary and unresolved, with architectural features competing for attention rather than working together. The space lacked a clear purpose and connection to the rest of the home.

The sitting room was refined into an intimate, welcoming retreat. A renewed fireplace surround, softened palette, and carefully scaled furnishings create a sense of balance and intention, offering a quiet place to pause that feels fully integrated within the larger home.

Family Room

The family room was visually busy and stylistically fragmented, shaped by furnishings and finishes accumulated over time. Despite its central location, it lacked cohesion and a clear relationship to the adjacent kitchen and living areas.

Now re-centered as a true gathering space, the family room brings the home together. Thoughtful furnishings, layered textures, and improved flow create a relaxed yet elevated environment that connects seamlessly to the kitchen, supporting everyday living while restoring harmony across the main level.

The Process

The Concept

During the early discovery phase, conducted through remote collaboration and an in-person site visit, we mapped out two strategic design directions to resolve the home’s structural quirks. Both options prioritized connection, function, and consistency across spaces. This foundation allowed the luxury home renovation San Diego County to move forward with clarity and confidence, even from a distance.

The Design

Detailed drawings, elevations, and 3D renderings guided every aspect of the redesign, from an ergonomic island and refined storage to concealed appliances and a feature tile wall. Shared remotely via Zoom, the renderings helped the homeowners clearly visualize how the kitchen would feel, supporting confident decisions across distance while ensuring alignment through ongoing reviews and site visits.

The Build

Although much of the design coordination took place remotely, the execution remained deeply hands-on. At critical construction milestones, cabinetry installation, millwork integration, tile setting, Beth traveled to California to assess details in person. This hybrid model ensured that decisions remained precise and that the interior design in Rancho Santa Fe aligned seamlessly with the final build.

Signature Moments

One of the most transformative moments of this California kitchen design is the reimagined “command center.” What had once been an underutilized alcove became a beautifully organized home administration hub, complete with concealed doors, integrated storage, and a refined palette that blends quietly into the surrounding cabinetry.

Across the kitchen, a custom feature tile wall brings a subtle Mediterranean rhythm, harmonizing with the newly lightened beams, refinished floors, and sculptural hood. These touches ground the home’s history while infusing it with the fresh ease of modern Mediterranean interiors.

Final Thoughts

The completed luxury home renovation in San Diego County reflects exactly what its name promises: a continuum, linking past and present, heritage and modernity, near and far, all brought into harmony through thoughtful, intuitive design. It demonstrates how thoughtful guidance, even from afar, brings coherence and confidence to every stage of the design.
